Small deposits of fat can be removed though liposuction with only a local anaesthetic. Larger ones or multiple areas require treatment with general anaesthesia. The procedure involves introducing a significant amount of solution into the area to be treated (wet liposuction). This fluid helps to minimize bleeding and bruising and helps to numb the area to reduce pain. A probe is inserted through a small incision to emulsify the fat. Fat is then suctioned out through the incision.
Following the procedure, you can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort for several days. You will need to wear an elasticized compression garment for one month to minimize swelling and assist with recovery. After several weeks, you will have a sense of your new body contour. Fat cells that are removed will not grow back. However, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a stablised weight. Large weight gains will cause the remaining fat cells to grow in size. For those patients with cellulite or loose skin, liposuction may still be an option if you are willing to accept the same or more loose skin/cellulite after the surgery, but the body contours will be better and more shapely in clothing. Dr. Kao or Dr. Wallman may discuss this with you if they believe that this is a possibility.
