As women age, many experience changes in the shape and firmness of their breasts. Due to changes in skin elasticity, many notice that their breasts begin to sag. After pregnancy and breastfeeding, sagging breasts may also occur. Women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts, but would like to regain a more youthful contour, may be candidates for a breast lift.
On your first office visit, Dr. Kao or Dr. Wallman will evaluate the size and shape of your breasts, the elasticity of your skin and the placement of your nipples and areolas to determine your suitability for a lift. While breasts of any size can be lifted, generally women with smaller breasts experience longer lasting results. Women who are overweight may be encouraged to stabilize their weight before the procedure.
During the procedure, Dr. Wallman or Dr. Kao will make several incisions from around the areola and the underside of the breast. Excess fat, skin and breast tissue are removed and the nipple is repositioned but not detached, using skin pulled from above its original position to create a new shape and contour for the breast.
Some women choose to have liposuction to further remove excess fat. Others who wish to enlarge the size of their breasts often choose to have an implant added at the time of their lift. Women who anticipate breastfeeding in the future should discuss this with Dr. Kao or Dr. Wallman at the time of their initial consultation.
Silicone gel implants are also available in Canada. These implants are made of a solid gel are called “gummy bear” implants because inside, they look and feel like gummy bears. Dr. Wallman and Dr. Kao will discuss with you what choice of implant will best help to achieve your desired results.
Once the incision is made, Dr. Kao or Dr. Wallman will create a pocket to place the implant. Depending on your size and shape of your breasts, this pocket will either be made directly behind the breast tissue or beneath your pectoral (chest) muscles. The implant is then inserted to complete the procedure.
Most women return to work and their usual activities in about one to two weeks following the insertion of implants. Following the procedure, it is normal to experience swelling and bruising. However, this will dissipate quickly.
Other potential complications include infection, blood accumulation in the breast which may require draining or side effects from anesthesia.
As part of the natural healing process, scar tissue forms around the implant. In a small percentage of women, the scar tissue becomes firm and tight. This is called a ‘capsular contracture’ and may result in the implant being compressed, causing the breast to feel more firm than usual. This can be treated through the removal of the scar tissue or, in more rare cases, the removal and reinsertion of a new implant.
Breast augmentation does not usually affect a woman’s ability to breast feed, unless nipple sensation is reduced, however some women do report changes in the sensitivity of the breast and nipples. It is important for women with implants during their routine mammograms to inform their health care practitioners of their implants as they may require additional imaging to capture a full view of their breasts.
Breast lifts do result in permanent scarring underneath the breast and around the areola. These scars, however, are generally easily covered by bras. Other potential side effects include bleeding, infection and side effects related to the use of anaesthesia.
Most women return to their usual level of activity, including a return to work in about two weeks following the procedure. It is recommended that women avoid heavy lifting and high impact exercise for six weeks.
